Subbu, also known as V.R. Balasubramaniyan, began his professional life far away from literature, working in the corporate and media world. He served as a sub-editor at Tamilan Express (The New Indian Express), where he developed a strong foundation in writing, analysis, and current affairs.

After spending many years in the professional field, Subbu gradually turned toward writing, driven by his deep interest in history, politics, and Tamil society. His early writing journey started with articles and short works, eventually evolving into full-length books that explored complex socio-political themes.

His breakthrough came with the publication of Dravida Maayai (2010), a thought-provoking work that examined the political and social developments in Tamil Nadu, particularly focusing on the Dravidian movement between 1917 and 1944. The book gained attention for its bold perspective and detailed narrative.

Following the success of his initial work, Subbu continued expanding the series and writing more books in Tamil, including works on historical and cultural subjects. His writings are known for encouraging readers to critically examine widely accepted ideas and historical narratives.

Over time, Subbu established himself as a recognized author and commentator. In addition to writing, he has also contributed to literary and intellectual circles as an editorial advisor and has been associated with national-level literary bodies such as the National Book Trust.
